چکیده
Cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) is a commodity produced in the developing countries of the tropics. It is mainly consumed in the middle and high income countries of the world’s temperate zone. Currently, over 50 countries are engaged in cocoa production and heavily rely only on cocoa exportation for their economic development, as this commodity contributes significantly to foreign exchange earnings. However, Phytophthora pod rot (Ppr), caused by Phytophthora palmivora, P. megakarya, P. capsici and P. citrophthora, is one of the prevalent and destructive diseases of cocoa (Iwaro et al., 1997). Global losses from Ppr are very great, and have been estimated by Wood and Lass (1985) at about 30% of annual production. The selection criteria used for development of new cocao varieties in the 1960s were based on the yield earliness and bean weight. Resistance to disease, based on field observations, was taken into account only as a secondary selection criterion. Consequently, the develop

Analysis of expressed sequence tags (ESTs) from cocoa (Theobroma cacao L) upon infection with Phytophthora megakarya
Phytophthora megakarya, the causative agent of cacao black pod disease in West African countries causes an extensive loss of yield. In this study we have analyzed 4 libraries of ESTs derived from Phytophthora megakarya infected cocoa leaf and pod tissues. Totally 6379 redundant sequences were retrieved from ESTtik database and EST processing was performed using seqclean tool. Clustering and ass...

A pathogenesis-related (PR) protein from Theobroma cacao (TcPR-10) was identified from a cacao-Moniliophthora perniciosa interaction cDNA library. Nucleotide and amino acid sequences showed homology with other PR-10 proteins having P loop motif and Betv1 domain. Recombinant TcPR-10 showed in vitro and in vivo ribonuclease activity, and antifungal activity against the basidiomycete cacao pathoge...
متن کاملThe “Guiana” genetic group: A new source of resistance to cacao (Theobroma cacao L.) black pod rot caused by Phytophthora capsici
Black pod rot, caused by Stramenopiles of the genus Phytophthora, leads to serious production losses in all cocoa growing zones. In order to reduce the impact of these pests, preference is given to genetic control using resistant varieties, and sources of resistance are actively being sought, particularly in wild cacao trees. Surveys were undertaken in the natural cacao tree populations of sout...

ABSTRACT Theobroma cacao, cacao, is an ancient, neotropical domesticate. It is now grown throughout the humid, lowland tropics and is the basis of a multibillion dollar confectionary trade. Diverse diseases impact production of the crop. They reduce yields by ca. 20%, but could cause far greater losses if certain highly damaging diseases were to become more widely distributed. Among the most po...
